Recommended Equipment

Before starting any covering project, organize your workspace.  Some essentials for your work area - good ventilation, a workbench, and a storage area for all of your covering tools and supplies.

Before you begin spraying your primer, paint, or dope, you'll need to decide what type of gun and unit you'll want to use.  For the urethane, we recommend an HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray unit with either gun style.  Most people prefer the syphon fee gun.  The butyrate dope doesn't necessarily require HVLP or a specific type of gun.  You can use a standard compression driven gun if you'd like.

When spraying the urethane, you'll need a viscosity cup.  A #2 Zahn cup is what is most often recommended.  However, Superflite carries a plastic #4 Ford cup that is considerably less expensive, and we provide a conversion chart.

Before you begin spraying any dope or urethane, you need to consider what you'll use for a paint booth.  Expensive and elaborate is not necessary.  In fact, you can build a fairly inexpensive booth out of plastic drop sheets and PVC pipe.  Just make sure you have a fresh air source and some kind of exhaust.  In addition, you'll want to wet down the floor before you begin spraying in the booth to minimize dust.
